R-kioski and the world’s worst hashtag

Dear Mom,

It’s that time of year again! Pride Week kicks off in Helsinki on 22.6 and ends the day after the parade. To help celebrate, R-kioski is re-launching last year’s Pride-themed take-away coffee cups with the cute little rainbow hearts and what just might be the worst hashtag ever used – #suvaitsevaisuus.

“Suvaitsevaisuus” means “tolerance”, and if you want to show support for your gay friends, that’s kinda’ not a cool way to do it. After all, “tolerance” basically means enduring something that everyone “normal” can see is wrong. And it’s a word used mostly by people who DO NOT support equality. As this super-conservative a-hole notes: “Tolerance does not mean approval.”

Thanks Rick, that pretty much sums it all up.

But wait, it gets even worse. Describing the idea behind the “tolerance cups,” R-kioski says that their rainbow-colored coffee cups are meant to be used by everyone, “whether the same or different.”

Uuuuuuugggghhhhhh! R-KIOSKI!!!!!! The whole point is EQUALITY, which means that guys who like guys, girls who like girls, guys who were born with vaginas and girls who were born with dicks aren’t any “different” from you, me or anyone else.

So, R-kioski, I truly believe that your heart is in the right place. And speaking of hearts, we love the rainbow ones on your cups. But if you really want to show and spread support for equality, lose the hashtag #suvaitsevaisuus and replace it with… well… how about #tasaarvoisuus or #sameatheart or ANYTHING else.

See you at the parade!

Love, Lissu
