Dear Lissu,

In theory I agree with much of what you say. However, and this is a big HOWEVER, this is what I have heard from my cousin Rich, who lives with his wife, children and grandchildren in Ashtod, right on the border. According to him, we do not get the whole story. For instance, he says that what Hamas will do is, when the sirens go off, have the children get on the rooftops to show they are ”proud Palestinians”. So, instead of going to a shelter, they get killed. As a parent and a rational human being, this is hard to believe, so it’s easier not to. But according to my sources, it’s true.

Those tunnels they keep talking about are used to shuttle terrorists back and forth into Israel, which, like Gaza, is also home to kids, families and people just like you and me. You’re from New York, so I would think you of all people would understand wanting to take any and all measures to keep terrorists from tunneling their way into your home.

Anyway, what do I know? I’m just your mother. And I know you’re less likely to believe me than the Israelis are to believe Hamas. And vice versa. But maybe you’ll listen to this reporter from Helsingin Sanomat when she tells you about the rockets she saw being fired from a hospital in Gaza towards those kids, families and people just like you and me in Israel.

B’shalom, Mom
