Dear Mom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yay! It\u2019s Saturday night and we\u2019ve got a babysitter coming so we can go out with friends. All I have to do now is take a shower, find something to wear, and come up with the lie I\u2019ll tell people when they ask why I\u2019m not drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before you even ask, yes, it is crazy that a 40-year-old woman has to lie to her 40-year-old friends about why she doesn\u2019t want to spend Saturday night getting wasted, but that\u2019s the way it is. Because in Finland, it\u2019s a bigger problem to not<\/em> drink than it is to be an alcoholic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could quote you all kinds of boring statistics<\/a>, but the fact of the matter is that here, people drink to get drunk. And drinking isn\u2019t always a social event. On weekends when your babysitter is unavailable (probably because she\u2019s out drinking), it\u2019s no problem because you can just stay at home and get \u201cunderwear drunk\u201d. Talk about having a party in your pants…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s funny how the definition of different social conditions can be so, well, different. Here, I know lots of people who have spent the night at the city\u2019s sobering station<\/a>, ironically located at the T\u00f6\u00f6l\u00f6 sports hall, but I don\u2019t know anyone who has ever been to rehab. In other parts of the world, your friends and family would surprise you with a professional intervention if they ever caught you drinking in your underwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why the big difference? The Finns\u2019 attribute their love of alcohol to lots of things \u2013 everything from shyness to low self-esteem caused by hundreds of years under Swedish rule to the weather. And they do that because that\u2019s what addicts do \u2013 they use every excuse in the book to justify their addiction. And, as it is with all addicts, you\u2019re either with them or fuck you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, on that note, I really should start to get ready. And as for tonight\u2019s lie, since my friends all know I\u2019m not planning on having any more kids, I guess I\u2019ll just go with \u201cI\u2019m taking medication my doctor said causes psychosis when taken with alcohol.\u201d My guess is they\u2019ll say: \u201cDrink enough and you won\u2019t even notice.\u201d God knows they won\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
