Dear Mom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other day I hugged my husband. His response? \u201cMove, you\u2019re blocking the TV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not exactly breaking news that most Finns aren\u2019t touchy-feely people. But today I came across an amazing article that literally drives that point home. The article is entitled \u201cTouch is as important to children as sleep<\/a>,\u201d and what\u2019s amazing about it is the fact that SOMEONE ACTUALLY FELT THE NEED TO WRITE AN ARTICLE TELLING PARENTS WHY THEY SHOULD TOUCH THEIR KIDS!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a 2-year-old and an almost 4-year-old at home, I\u2019m not sure how people manage not<\/em> to touch their kids. But hey, this is Finland and I know plenty of adult kids who greet their own parents with a firm handshake and a nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As child psychiatrist Jukka M\u00e4kel\u00e4 writes, Finnish kids are taught from a young age to be as independent and self-reliant as possible. As a result, he says: \u201cOur healthcare system needs to teach parents that touch is as important to children\u2019s development as sleep, nutrition or exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow, that\u2019s crazy and<\/em> depressing. But let\u2019s read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e4kel\u00e4 encourages parents of older kids to ask them how they\u2019re doing, even when they\u2019re glued to their laptops. \u201cTry putting your hands on their shoulders and giving them a light massage while you do,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah, that sounds like a really cool way to break the ice with your tween….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e4kel\u00e4 does have a doctorate degree and a Marimekko Jokapoika shirt, so I have to assume he knows what he\u2019s talking about. And, more importantly, that it needs saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s an idea! Instead of talking<\/em> to parents about the importance of touch, maybe we could hire some of the Latinas, Latinos, southern Europeans, Americans, Middle Easterners living here to teach it in action. I\u2019d LOVE to see that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until then, I\u2019m going to keep on hugging. There\u2019s nothing good on TV on Wednesdays, so this could be my night!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
