Dear Mom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few weeks ago my phone rang. It was my accountant. \u201cAre you sitting down?,\u201d she asked. This is a question you definitely don\u2019t want to hear from either your doctor or your accountant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily I was sitting down, because she was calling to tell me that I owe the government a lot (I mean A LOT) of money in back taxes. \u201cYou worked too hard last year,\u201d she said when I asked how this could have happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s true what they say:  You can\u2019t get rich in Finland just by working hard. Unless you happen to be a drug dealer, a high-priced prostitute (no taxes), or the owner of lots of great stock or a successful company that someone else wants to buy, you\u2019re basically doomed to eternal middle-classdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only logical option I can think of is to invest in the lottery. I know my chances are small, but as the NY Lottery\u2019s slogan goes: \u201cHey, you never know!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I heard on some TV show that the one thing all lottery winners have in common is that they\u2019ve always truly believed they\u2019d win one day. I guess they\u2019ve all downloaded The Secret<\/a>, which for $2.99 will tell you how to harness the power of your thoughts and energy to \u201ccreate the life of your dreams.\u201d Now that\u2019s $2.99 well spent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the life of my dreams includes lots of cash, and since I pay my accountant \u20ac300 a month to tell me I\u2019m working too hard, for the past few weeks I\u2019ve been investing \u20ac60 a week in lottery tickets. So far so nothing, but if I truly believe one day I\u2019ll win, it\u2019s a small price to pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest problem right now is that my husband and I have been fighting about how to handle ourselves when we do win. I plan on telling everyone I know and throwing a huge party. He says he\u2019s going to divorce me if I tell anyone \u2013 even you. That\u2019s ok with me. Once I\u2019ve collected my millions I\u2019ll just buy myself a new husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His point is that a sudden windfall is the fastest way to ruin your life<\/a>. There would be lines of people in front of our new luxury home with their hands out, jealous friends and family members, and all sorts of problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typical \u201cglass-is-always-empty\u201d Finn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike him, I can\u2019t think of one single problem with winning millions. While it\u2019s not everything, I believe money definitely does buy happiness. I\u2019d travel, help friends and family, save for my kids, and take my accountant\u2019s advice and work less. My glass wouldn\u2019t just be full, it would be running over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, it\u2019s Saturday \u2013 lottery day \u2013 so in just a few hours my life might change. And it doesn\u2019t really matter if it\u2019s not tonight. As a future lottery winner, I know it will be someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
