That was a beautiful letter, and I\u2019m very sorry to hear about the death of your friend. That said, I’m not 100% sure I like the idea of telling people you love them every single minute of the day. It kind of gives me the creeps – sort of like: ”Listen, I’m telling you I love you just in case you walk out the front door and get hit by a car. Then I won’t feel guilty.” I think it\u2019s better to behave like you love someone. I don’t mean never say it – just don’t say it as emotional insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course lots of people believe there\u2019s an afterlife and that it\u2019s possible to communicate with the dearly departed. I\u2019ve always hoped there\u2019s life after death, but I\u2019ve never believed it. But this morning I realized something that changed my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As you know, I am an avid reader of the New York Times obituaries. There are also ”In Memoriums” on that page. Many times they say things like: \u201cDear Grandma, We have missed you these past five years. Since you have gone, Shirley had a baby girl, and your grandson Max had his Bar Mitzvah.\u201d Obviously, that means you can still get the New York Times delivered after you die. If that\u2019s not proof of an afterlife, I don\u2019t know what is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Um, ok, I think I just proved a major cosmic theory and I haven\u2019t even had my breakfast yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
